Hair Loss Prevention And Treatment

Most people become conscious of their looks when they suffer from the effects of premature hair loss. Young adults, filled with ambition will find that balding is a serious threat to their self esteem, their social life and in some instances, their career. Vanity is not their only concern, as people employed in the hospitality or entertainment industries need to look their best, and retain their youthful image for as long as possible. Others, suffering from pattern baldness, may lose their drive and become withdrawn because they see themselves as looking old and straight laced.

Women in particular, find that the loss of hair is quite distressing, as a full head of thick healthy hair is their crowning glory, and a positive sign of health and beauty. Once the first signs of hair loss appear, women will go to great lengths to treat the condition and restore their natural looks.

Whatever the reason people may have for wanting to stop losing their hair or replace lost hair, the natural urge to take some action is quite compelling. Therefore there are a lot of therapists, clinics and over the counter preparations in the market place, ready to cater for an unending stream of customers. No longer are wigs the only option for hiding baldness, technology has produced medications that are effective in maintaining healthy hair, and synthetic hairpieces to replace hair that has been unavoidably lost.

Hair colors can be correctly matched with synthetic hairpieces, which are affordable and easy to maintain. When fitted and groomed, a modern hairpiece is unnoticeable and long lasting. Most men that need replacement hair choose a hairpiece rather than a hair transplant, because of the difference in cost, and the convenience of a hairpiece. Hair transplants require surgery, whereas a synthetic hair piece can be tailored and fitted with a minimum of inconvenience.

Therapists have developed treatments that involve scalp stimulation, which can prevent hair loss and encourage the growth of new hair. Stimulation and grooming promotes blood circulation in the scalp and to the hair follicles, which in turn promotes hair growth. Medicated hair lotions may be used in conjunction with this type of treatment.

There is an enormous range of lotions and creams on the market that are promoted as hair tonics, restorers and miracle creams. Some of these products are of little value, while others may be of some benefit.

Nizoral Anti-Fungal Shampoo is a useful product that eliminates dandruff and dead skin cells, which can block pores and clog up hair follicles. Nizoral has an active ingredient, ketoconazole, which is an anti fungal agent that blocks Dihydrotestosterone from reaching the hair follicles, allowing the hair to receive a normal supply of minerals, proteins and vitamins that promote and sustain healthy hair.

Saw Palmetto is a berry that is native to North America and believed to act as a DHT blocker, which would lead one to the conclusion that it would promote hair growth. At this stage, researchers have not established that Saw Palmetto does assist hair growth. It is available over the counter in capsule or lotion form, and it may be used in conjunction with other natural herbs.

The mineral zinc, is a common ingredient of many hair lotions, and it can also be obtained in tablet form. Therapists recommend zinc supplements to encourage the growth of healthy hair. People, who live in developed countries usually get the daily recommended dosage of zinc from their diet, however vegetarians may be found lacking in zinc, because of the low content of the mineral in vegetable plants.

Hair growth disturbances in women usually occur during puberty, pregnancy and menopause, which are times when their hormone levels are radically changing. Some women can start losing hair even during puberty, although this is uncommon. Giving birth can effect women's hair, causing naturally curly hair to straighten and lose its luster, or drastically thin out. Generally, hair loss after giving birth is not permanent and will return to normal when the hormone levels stabilize.

The only medication approved by the FDA for use by women to treat hair loss, is Rogaine which, during clinical tests, has been proven to successfully treat the symptoms of hair loss in eighty percent of those studied.

Don't shrug off or ignore the signs of hair loss. Early detection and proper professional care can stall the balding process and help you maintain your confidence, and your appearance.
