The Hair Loss Pill Will Stop You From Losing You Hair

By: LA Hunter

If you swallowed a hair loss pill everyday, you would be almost assured of maintaining a full cover of hair. The pill is known as propecia and it is a creation of scientific serendipity, which is an alternative way of saying that it is a blessed, accidental consequence.

More than two decades ago, Merck Pharmaceuticals distributed a drug called proscar to the public. Proscar was approved for the treatment of BPH, or Benign Prostate Hyperplasia. The active ingredient in proscar was finasteride. The pill was taken daily by a group of men that were over sixty years of age and suffered from BPH. Finasteride was not only found to inhibit the development of prostate cancer, but was also found to prevent hair loss. As a result of further tests, Merck concluded that at least 1mg of finasteride was needed to obtain a satisfactory result.

An experiment lasting two years, which was conducted on over fifteen hundred men, showed that more that eighty percent maintained, or in fact, increased their hair count from the baseline. This one of a kind experiment began in 1997, and it was found out that the original test subjects actually maintained successful results for another 4 years after the trial was completed. This 1mg of finasteride was distributed under the brand name, Propecia.

An added consequence of taking propecia is that it affects the levels of testosterone (male hormone) in the body, and therefore is available only by prescription. A doctor must be consulted for advice, and the suggested dosage should be strictly administered. Hormonal balances can be really delicate, so keeping to a regular dosage will help to ensure stability.

The falling of hair may not be a sign that you instantly need to begin taking the hair loss pill. There is a natural three stage process of hair growth and renewal that sometimes can be literally forced into a heavy hair loss mode. This seemingly spontaneous shedding, also called Telegen Effluvium, is not a permanent condition and usually precedes a steady hair growth stage.

Propecia treatment is a very gradual process and demands patience on the part of the user. One should not expect any results for about three months, with steady regrowth not occurring until about the ninth month. Optimum results do not appear until at least one year after the start of the treatment.

The cost of drugs nowadays, differs from one place to another and brand to brand, so it's also advisable to canvass before choosing the brand of medication you want to use. Relatively speaking, proscar and propecia both have the same active ingredient, finasteride, but the dosage quantities differ. There is five milligram of finasteride in proscar, but propecia only has one milligram of finasteride.

So, in a prescription of proscar, you conceivably can get five times the number of doses than for a similar prescription for propecia. If the two prescriptions are priced almost the same, evidently purchasing the proscar and splitting the pills would be the most cost effective way to go. Finding the time to study this aspect before buying the preparation, may be worthwhile.
